DIY Guide to Replacing a Blower Wheel
A blower wheel is the rotating part of a furnace, air handler, or other type of air conditioning unit. Replacing a blower wheel doesn’t require any special tools and can usually be done in about an hour. This guide will help you replace your own blower wheel.
1. Unplug the unit from the wall and turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
2. Disconnect the motor wiring by removing the leads. Remove the mounting screws that hold the motor to the cabinet.
3. Remove the blower wheel. Depending on the model, you may be able to simply unscrew the wheel or you may need to use a pair of pliers.
4. Clean the blower wheel shaft with a wire brush to remove any dirt or debris.
5. Inspect the blower wheel to make sure there are no damaged areas. If there are, the blower wheel must be replaced.
6. Install the new blower wheel. Carefully line up the mounting holes and secure the wheel with the screws.
7. Plug the motor wiring back in and reconnect the leads.
8. Reinstall the motor and secure it with the mounting screws.
