The Dishwasher High Limit Thermostat is a safety device located at the bottom of the dishwasher. The only difference between the high limit thermostat and the operating thermostat is their opening and closing temperatures. If your dishwasher won’t heat, replacing this part may alleviate the issue. Replacing this part will require basic hand tools, some disassembly of the appliance and novice repair experience. You must unplug the appliance or shut off the house circuit breaker before installing this part. Also make sure you turn off the water supply under the sink. Step-by-Step Instructions on How to Replace a Whirlpool WP661566 Thermostat
1. Unplug your appliance from the power source before beginning any work.
2. To access the thermostat, locate the service panel located at the back of your appliance and remove it.
3. Remove the metal case surrounding the thermostat by unscrewing all screws.
4. Disconnect the wires running to the thermostat by unscrewing the terminal screws.
5. Take note of the wire connection arrangement before unplugging it, this will help you remember how to reconfigure the wiring later.
6. Install the new thermostat onto the metal case by using the same screws removed in step 3. Make sure to connect the wires to the appropriate terminals.
7. Securely fasten all the screws with a screwdriver.
8. Reattach the service panel and plug your appliance back in.
9. Test if the thermostat is working properly.
10. If it is working properly, your repair is finished! If not, refer to the owner’s manual for further instructions.
