The Whirlpool® SxS Refrigerator Defrost Timer manages the automatic defrost cycle in your appliance’s freezer compartment. If the timer isn’t advancing like it should or triggering your freezer to enter defrost mode, the part could be broken and need replacement. This part is designed for continuous or cumulative run defrost systems; refer to the included installation instructions to properly install this part in your specific model. Note that this part does not include the defrost timer knob. Installing this part will require basic hand tools, some disassembly of the dishwasher and novice repair experience. Step 1: Unplug the refrigerator before replacing the Whirlpool Defrost Timer (W10822278).
Step 2: Remove the screws that hold the back panel of the refrigerator in place.
Step 3: Locate the defrost timer behind the refrigerator's control panel and unplug the two wires that connect to it.
Step 4: Unscrew the two nuts that hold the timer in place, using a nut driver.
Step 5: Disconnect the old timer and install the replacement timer (W10822278).
Step 6: Reconnect the two wires to the new timer and secure the timer back in place with the nuts.
Step 7: Plug the refrigerator back into the power outlet.
Step 8: Test the timer by setting the timer dial to "OFF", turning the fridge off, and waiting for approximately 15 minutes before turning the refrigerator back on. If the timer is working properly, the refrigerator should automatically shut off after 15 minutes.
Step 9: Reset the timer by turning the knob to the desired defrost cycle setting.
