Step 1: Unplug Your GE Washer
Before starting any repair on a washing machine, it’s important to unplug the unit from its power source. This simple step will help ensure you won’t accidentally get electrocuted while working on the appliance.
Step 2: Disconnect the Inlet Hoses
Next, you’ll need to disconnect the inlet hoses from the back of the washer. The two water hoses connected to your washer should be labeled with hot and cold markings. Disconnect both of these hoses from the unit and drain them into a bucket.
Step 3: Remove the Drain Pump
In order to access the drain pump so you can replace it, you’ll need to first remove the back panel of the washer. This process can vary slightly based on the model of your washer, but typically you’ll need to unscrew a few screws that are holding the panel in place. Once the panel is off, you’ll be able to locate the drain pump. Unscrew the mounting bolts and slide the pump out.
Step 4: Install the New Drain Pump
Slide the new drain pump into place and secure it with the same mounting screws you used to remove the old pump. Then, reconnect the inlet hoses to the back of the washer.
Step 5: Test the Drain Pump
Now that the drain pump is installed, you should run a short cycle test to make sure it’s functioning properly. Add some water to the washer tub and start a small load. If the water drains correctly, then your repair is complete and you can replace the back panel.
Please keep in mind, these instructions are for general guidance and should always be used in conjunction with the manufacturer's manual, if available.
