How to Replace the Drive Motor in a Top-Load Washer

This guide explains how to replace the drive motor in a belt-drive top-load washer. The drive motor powers both the agitator and the spin basket. If your washer stops spinning or agitating, replacing the motor may solve the issue.

Tools Required

  • Channel lock pliers
  • Socket wrench set
  • Towels or cardboard
  • Work gloves

Step 1: Shut Off Electricity and Water

  • Unplug the washer from the wall outlet.
  • Turn off hot and cold water valves.
  • Wear gloves and move the washer away from the wall.

Step 2: Disconnect the Hoses

  • Label each fill hose (hot/cold).
  • Use pliers to disconnect them. Expect spills.
  • Remove the drain hose from the standpipe.

Step 3: Lay the Washer on Its Front Panel

  • Lay down towels or cardboard for protection.
  • Carefully tilt and lay the washer on its front.

Step 4: Remove the Drive Motor

  • Unscrew and remove the plastic motor cover.
  • Pull the belt off the pulleys by rotating them.
  • Unbolt the motor and disconnect the wire harness.

Step 5: Install the New Motor

  • Mount the new motor and tighten bolts.
  • Reconnect the wire harness securely.
  • Install the belt by rotating the pulley.
  • Reattach the motor cover.

Step 6: Set the Washer Upright

  • Carefully lift the washer upright.
  • Move it closer to the water connections.

Step 7: Reinstall the Fill Hoses

  • Connect hoses to their correct inlets.
  • Tighten with pliers—do not overtighten.

Step 8: Restore Water and Power

  • Turn the water valves back on.
  • Check for leaks.
  • Plug in the washer and return to place.

Replacing a faulty motor can bring your washer back to life. Always use OEM drive motors for long-term performance and reliability.
