How to Replace a Washing Machine Belt: Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Unplug Your Washing Machine and Shut Off the Water Supply

  • Disconnect the power and water hoses for safety.
  • Unplug the machine and turn off the water supply.
  • This prevents electric shock and makes the washer easier to move.

Step 2: Remove the Access Panel

  • Pull the washer away from the wall.
  • Top-load: Tilt the machine on its side if needed.
  • Front-load: The access panel is typically on the back.
  • Use a screwdriver to remove screws and release clips or latches.

Step 3: Locate and Remove the Old Belt

  • Find the thick rubber drive belt around the motor and drum pulleys.
  • Loosen any tension system first if needed.
  • Carefully rotate the drum pulley to slip the belt off.
  • Inspect the old belt for wear and damage.

Step 4: Install the New Drive Belt

  • Fit the belt around the motor pulley first.
  • Stretch it over the drum pulley next.
  • Rotate the drum by hand to check tension.
  • Adjust if the belt is too loose or too tight.

Step 5: Reattach the Access Panel and Reconnect the Washer

  • Secure the access panel back with screws or clips.
  • Reconnect the hot and cold water hoses securely.
  • Plug the washer back in and test with a small load.
