How to Replace a Washing Machine Belt: Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Unplug Your Washing Machine and Shut Off the Water Supply
- Disconnect the power and water hoses for safety.
- Unplug the machine and turn off the water supply.
- This prevents electric shock and makes the washer easier to move.
Step 2: Remove the Access Panel
- Pull the washer away from the wall.
- Top-load: Tilt the machine on its side if needed.
- Front-load: The access panel is typically on the back.
- Use a screwdriver to remove screws and release clips or latches.
Step 3: Locate and Remove the Old Belt
- Find the thick rubber drive belt around the motor and drum pulleys.
- Loosen any tension system first if needed.
- Carefully rotate the drum pulley to slip the belt off.
- Inspect the old belt for wear and damage.
Step 4: Install the New Drive Belt
- Fit the belt around the motor pulley first.
- Stretch it over the drum pulley next.
