How to Replace Agitator Dogs in a Washing Machine: Step-by-Step Instructions
01. Shut Off the Electricity
- Unplug the washer from the wall outlet to ensure safety.
- Wear protective work gloves to avoid injury during the repair.
02. Remove the Agitator
- Pull off the fabric softener dispenser from the top of the agitator.
- Remove the agitator dust cap.
- Using a 7/16" socket with an extension, loosen and remove the agitator bolt.
- Carefully pull the entire agitator out and place it on a flat work surface.
- Tip: If your model has a spring retainer with a 1/2" square hole, use a 1/2" ratchet drive to remove it.
03. Remove the Agitator Dogs
- Pull the upper auger section off the agitator.
- Dump out the agitator cam from inside the auger.
- Remove the plastic bearing that holds the dogs in place.
- Take out the worn agitator dogs from the cam.
04. Install the New Agitator Dogs
- Push the new agitator dogs into the cam slots.
- Reattach the plastic bearing over the dogs to lock them in place.
- Insert the cam back into the auger.
- Align and place the auger back on top of the agitator assembly.
05. Reinstall the Agitator
- Position the agitator on the shaft inside the washer.
- Reinsert and tighten the 7/16" bolt with washer to secure the agitator.
- Replace the dust cap.
- Snap the fabric softener dispenser back into place on top of the agitator.
06. Restore Power to the Washer
- Plug the washing machine back into the electrical outlet to complete the repair.
